Question of the Month March 2018

For this month’s Question of the Month from Later Levels the question master is Luke from Hundstrasse (who also won last month’s Question of the Month). The question is: “aren’t games great? And isn’t it even greater when one game spills out into another? So for this month’s question I’d like to know what the best gaming crossover is, and most importantly why? (For the purposes of this question a ‘crossover’ can be anything from a subtle nod to a different game to a full on mashup of two titles.)

Now this got me thinking. There were some options here. But I decided to go to one that I played recently. That game is Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.

My reasoning is it is a fantastic game. Full of puzzles and courtroom sessions in a brilliant crossover between the Professor Layton series and Ace Attorney series. So you have Professor Layton and Luke Triton working together in parts with Phoenix Wright and Maya Fey. The story telling through the game progressing with puzzles as well as courtroom sections allowed for the characters to work alone in their element as well as together to solve problems. For instance Professor Layton and Luke are mainly involved in trying to solve the mystery of Labyrinthia and Phoenix Wright and Maya are trying to protect people from wrongful convictions. However The characters also take turns with puzzles and working together in the court room when required. The story in this game is fantastic and I really enjoyed how it opened up over time with the twists and turns. The art style is a great mix of the two styles which somehow works very well even though it must have been difficult to put together appropriately.

I think this works so well because it is a complete mashup between the two, with the two companies (Level-5 and Capcom) jointly working on the game.

What is the best gaming crossover for you? If you want to take part there is plenty of time, see Later Levels post for more details.

  1. I really want to play this game at some point, but while I’m pretty familiar with Phoenix Wright I’ve only played some of one Layton game. I gotta catch up so I can check this one out!

    1. I’ve played more Professor Layton games, and to be honest I’m not 100% sure of all the Phoenix Wright games I have played as I had borrowed some from a friend at the time. Despite that (and my perhaps patchy knowledge other than reading about it) I love the series and how the stories progress. Whereas Layton games I am much more familiar with. You should definitely check this out one day.

  2. That game is on my list of games for sure, has been for a long while… one day…. The only cross ever game I played was Return to poplocrois.. and it wasn’t a bad game…but it wasn’t the top ten best games ever either. It was cute had somewhat predictable plot… interesting characters and the battles style was a play on the typical RPG turn based battling system
Anyways in the future I hope to expand my game repertoire

    1. I’ve mainly played Professor Layton games, owned one Ace Attorney game and played a couple of others I think (borrowed from a friend at the time years ago so not 100% on them). I love the way Ace Attorney games progress though from my perhaps limited experience of them and from reading about them and would say I’m a fan even if that sounds odd as I haven’t got the most consistent experience with the games. I would like to play more of them but the problem is finding them… but YouTube and blogs help with that. I love the style though.

      1. I really like them as I think they have a great sense of humour. There’s a short anime series based on Ace Attorney which I really enjoyed recently. It doesn’t get great reviews but I thought it was hilarious!

      2. I had heard about the anime and want to try to watch it at some point. I think the series is great, I just wish I could replay them all so I knew where I was with the series. Then I could also stop feeling odd when I say I love the series despite being unsure of what ones I have played myself and seeing it a lot through videos etc. I just think the style is fantastic and they way they do stories work so well.
